Midwives in Labor:
Union Organizing Among Certified Nurse-Midwives

I am conducting a study about unionizing nurse-midwives. This project focuses on issues in the organization of healthcare that affect health professionals’ work and well-being. By studying the labor organizing of nurse-midwives, I aim to understand the conditions that precipitate labor organizing among nurse-midwives, the labor organizing process, and the effects of unionization for nurse-midwives and the health systems in which they work. This study is approved by the University of California, San Francisco Institutional Review Board (#24-41214).

Participation in this research involves a one hour interview with me. I am interviewing nurse-midwives who are opting in or out of unionization, chiefs or managers of unionizing midwives, union officials, and health system administrators involved in bargaining. Participants will receive a $50 gift card as a thank you for their time.
